Vijay Singh

Vijay Singh is a professional golfer with an amazing worth ethic. Whether it’s physical workouts or the hours he spends hitting balls on the driving range and in short game areas, he seems to work harder and win more the older he gets. In 2003 he posted 4 wins, 14 top-10 finishes, and led the PGA Tour in money. Then in 2004, he won 9 times, posted 18 top-10s, won the Vardon Trophy, lead the PGA Tour in money, and was named player of the year. ’04 was one of his best seasons of all time.

Singh grew up in Fiji where his father, an airplane technician and golf teacher, taught him how to play golf. He went pro in 1982, winning the Malaysian Open in 1984. In ’85, Singh was alleged to have altered his scorecard in an attempt to make a cut at an Asian Tour event. He denied the allegations, but was suspended by the Asian Tour. After that, he spent time as a golf pro in Borneo, and continued playing around the world. Eventually he won tournaments in more than 15 countries.

In 1988 Singh joined the European PGA Tour, and played full-time for 5 years. In ’93 he joined the U.S. PGA Tour and was named Rookie of the Year. He competed often, with sporadic wins before finally breaking through for his first major, the 1998 PGA. Then in 2000 he added a Masters title.

Singh’s career soared in 2003 and 2004, and he became the first golfer to earn $10 million in a single season in ’04, when he was also the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world. He lost his No. 1 ranking in ’05, but continued to be near the top of the rankings. He won once in 2006 and opened the ’07 season with a victory at the Mercedes Benz Championship. That was his 18th win since turning 40, breaking the record held by Sam Snead for most PGA Tour wins after age 40.

The Vijay Singh Charitable Foundation benefits charities and non-profit organizations that assist and support women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
