By now, you have probably heard of Vijay Singh, but how much do you know about this Fijian born golf superstar? Singh has climbed the golf tower over the past few years, and he is known as one of the world’s top golfers. During the years 2004-2005 Singh spent thirty-two consecutive weeks as the official “best golfer in the world,” and today this born winner is still going strong.
The story of Vijay Singh is a truly inspirational one that reminds any sport enthusiast of many great soccer legends. Singh was born into a poor village in Fiji, which meant that golf balls were simply not to be found. Instead of allowing his golf dream to pass by, Singh and his friends became invention and used hard shelled coconuts instead. Singh was an athlete from day one, and often his parents would find him playing snooker, cricket, soccer, and rugby on a daily basis. When Singh decided to go professional, in 1984, it only took him two years to make a name for himself. Singh easily won the Malaysian PGA Championship, but his career began to look bleak when he was suspended from the Asian Tour in 1985. The Asian Tour accused Singh of fixing his score card in order to gain admittance into the tour, but to this day Sing denies that this was the case. Instead of giving up, Sing found a job at the Keningau Club in Sabah, Malaysia, where he was able to make some very powerful Shell CEO friends.
In 1989, Singh entered the European Tour Qualifying school, and won his first European Tour title at the Volvo Open Championship. From that point on, Vijay Singh became a household name, and the golfer could be seen on television nearly every time there was a green near a camera. Currently, Singh still practices his swing every day, and he is still known as one of the best golfers in the world. It’s amazing what the wishes, ambitions, and innovation of a small Fijian boy playing with a coconut can lead to.
