With 2007 coming to a close, the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA) has announced its golfers of the year. Not surprisingly, Tiger Woods once again captured the top honor for the PGA Tour, receiving 205 of the 210 possible votes. It's the ninth time in 11 years Woods has won Golfer of the Year. Woods claimed seven titles on tour this year, including his 13th career major with yet another PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson finished a distant second, receiving the five remaining votes.
Lorena Ochoa was named the Golfer of the Year on the LPGA Tour for the second consecutive year. The 26-year-old Ochoa became the No. 1 female golfer in the world this year, posting eight victories, including the Women's British Open, which marked her first major win. Ochoa finished with $4 million in prize money. No female golfer had ever earned as much as $3 million in a season.
Jay Haas won Golfer of the Year for the Senior PGA Tour. It was also Haas' second consecutive win, marking the first time there's been a repeat winner on the senior tour since Hale Irwin in 1997 and 1998. Haas notched four victories in 2007, and he led the tour in money earnings for the second straight year. He won the GWAA award with 152 votes. Loren Roberts finished second with 56 votes.
Woods, Ochoa, and Haas will be honored at the GWAA awards dinner in Augusta, Georgia, on April 9.
