Wie Won't Play PGA Events

Michelle Wie won't be competing on the PGA Tour in 2008. After a disastrous 2007, Wie and her representatives have decided to take the upcoming year to focus on getting healthy and competing solely on the LPGA Tour.

Wie will probably be happy to see 2007 come to a close. The 18-year-old golf prodigy had a year she'd like to forget. She entered nine tournaments this year, but she managed to make only three cuts. She also withdrew from two competitions. In fact, she only broke par twice all year.

Wie also drew the ire of Annika Sorenstam. The young Hawaiian golfer pulled out of Sorenstam's tournament, citing an injury. But Sorenstam later saw Wie on the practice range hitting balls with no signs of difficulty. Days earlier, Wie withdrew from a tournament, blaming an injured wrist. But she was playing so poorly, had she finished the round, her pitiful score would have made her ineligible for future events. Skipping Sorenstam's tournament only continued the apparent ruse.

Wie had played the PGA Tour's Sony Open every year since 2004, but she did not receive one of the tournament's four unrestricted sponsor exemptions this time around. If she sticks true to her word, she'll only be appearing in the eight LPGA events in 2008.

Outside of her golf game, Wie seems to be doing quite well, recently completing her first semester at Stanford. While competing against men could still be in her future, her goal at the moment is trying to balance golf with school.
