Ryan Gay Wins 89 Maine Amature Championship

SACO, Me. Ryan Gay a 17 year old from Gardiner High School played in the first group of the day Tuesday, along with defending champion Eric Higgins and Joe Alverez. Higgins got off to a rough start, he had a bogey on the seventh hole, hit the rake on the tenth and the ball went into a hazard. He ended up with a double bogey. On the eleventh hole he had 202 yards to the green and flew over with a six iron. He got his game back for the last six holes but still ended up with a 75. Gay hit nearly every green and made four birdies and never needed more than two putts the rest of the day for a bogey free round of 67. On the 18th hole his tee shot found the right side of the fairway, his shot to the green found the back part leaving him a 4o' over a ridge and down a hill. His first putt ended up within four feet of the hole where he made par.

Two time champion Ricky Jones made a 50' putt one the third hole then drained a putt from the rough on the fourth hole. On the eleventh hole he saved par from 50' on a double braker to end up with a 2 under 69.

Thirteen time champion Mark Plummer said "you had to be careful where you left your ball and what angle you were coming in from". At one time Mark was three under but a few bogeys on the back nine got him back to one under 70 for a tie with Shawn Keean and Toby Buteau.

On Wednesday Ryan had a smooth front nine but ran into trouble on the back nine with three straight bogeys and finished two over 73 and three shots back.

Ricky Jones started the day off with a bogey on the first hole then he went on to birdie four holes in hia round and ended up with a 68 for the lead. Plummer started the day off with a 30' birdie put.He also had birdies on ten and seventeen for a 68 and was in second place one shot back.

Ryan Gay went into the sand trap on his tee shot on Thursday on the second hole but made a good second, shot to eight feet from the hole to save par. Then he made four streight birdies. After eight holes he lead both Plummer and Jones by one stroke. Jones Bogied five holes and fell back to even par. Plummer bogeyed three holes and ended up two shots back. Gay and Plummer play a lot of golf at the Augusta Country Club in Manchester Me.
