The PGA is an annual golf tournament played in mid August which is one of four major championships and is conducted by the PGA Tour. The PGA Championship is nicknamed “Glory’s last shot” because of its official money prize of $7.5 million. Among the many golf tournaments the PGA gives a golfer several privileges which makes their careers more secure. The winners of the tournament are automatically invited to play in the Masters, the U.S Open and the British Open which are three other important majors.
The first PGA Championship was held in 1916 in New York, with an amount of $500 awarded to Jim Barnes who won the tournament. This high profile tournament was established specifically for professional golfers in a world that was largely run by wealthy amateurs. The PGA Tour has been self-governing of the PGA of America; the tour is now an elite organization of professional golfers. Hundred top players in the world are granted an entry in the Championships which makes the competition more competitive and longer.
One of the most important aspects of the PGA is its venues. Since the tournament is for the elite, it has to be played on good quality grass. At present, it is usually staged by a small group of celebrated courses, which have also hosted several other leading events. Players who want to play in the tournament should all be former PGA Champions, or winners of the last five U.S and British Opens.
